History

The history of the moated castle began in the first decade of the 14th century. The first mention of the palace was dated in 1307 when the land was given to Heinrich von Schenck for his services and construction began.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the water castle was structurally renovated and subsequently used as a hunting castle or hunting lodge. The newly expanded palace was created by Rudolf Schenk after a fire in 1483 that damaged the residential building.

The castle stayed in possession of the Schenk family until the end of the Second World War. After the Second World War, all property was expropriated without compensation to the noble family by the Soviets. Equipment from the castle came to Magdeburg , Halle an der Saale and Altenhausen. Then it was used as a shelter for the refugees and relocated people, after it - as a hospital with special facilities for tuberculosis sufferers.

The castle on an island was sold to private property only at the end of the 20th century and the construction of a castle-hotel was launched.
