Location

The Schkopau Castle in Saxony-Anhalt is located 25 km west of Leipzigis. The property lies on a hill between the Schkopau town and the Saale river. Also, the confluence of the Saale River with 2 of its biggest tributaries is located near Schkopau.

There is the possibility to see stunning scenery from the top of the castle - a combination of old-time unspoiled nature and new generation industrial buildings.

History

The original building was probably built in the ninth century as a Carolingian fortification and expanded as Scapowe Castle in the twelfth century. The place was first mentioned in 1215 when Emperor Friedrich II donated the imperial castle to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. In 1444 the hus tu Schapow fell to the Bishop of Merseburg and in 1477 to the von Trotha family. From 1554 to 1558, the southern parts of the castle were converted into a residential palace, and the medieval keep with a diameter of 11 meters was integrated into the new building. In 1830 a fire made it necessary to rebuild the north wing. In 1876 the castle was rebuilt in the neo-renaissance style.

When the construction of the Buna works was planned in the 1930s, the locations Döllnitz or Schkopau were available. A member of the von Trotha family, a general, was able to influence the decision in favour of Schkopau in Berlin. This enabled the family to sell their land to IG Farbenindustrie AG and thus financially restructure themselves.

In 1945 the von Trotha family was expropriated as part of the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone. Later that year, the property was used as refugee accommodation and became an administrative object. As a result, it ended up empty for several years and fell into ruin.

In 1996 first restoration work started, which led to the opening of an exclusive castle hotel in 2001. The hotel had 54 rooms that were offered for rent.

Reconstruction

During the reconstruction, the number of apartments will be increased to 80. The apartments are going to be remodelled and completely refurbished. Renovations for bathrooms are going to be carried out, as well as storage areas. Refurbishment and modernisation of the cellar and restaurant will also be carried out.

After the reconstruction work is completed, the ADN group plans to rent this property to organisations serving people in need by providing space for rehabilitation and care. Currently, the castle is used as a hotel.
